She tells her classmate Jansie that she will have the finest boutiques and then she would have the best shop in the town. For this she would need money, so she would work as a manager in a company. Jansie tells her that none would give her a manager's job straightway but Sophie goes on. She says she would become an actress or a fashion designer. In reality though, she belongs to a poor family. She likes to live in a world of fantasy, she makes up stories about her meeting with the young player Danny Casey and their intimate talks. She shares her false stories about the meeting with her brother. She is warned by her friend, father and her brother, but she continues to be the same full of imagination and fanciful ideas.

Ans:- For Sophie her brother Geoff was the only person with whom she could share her secrets. He listened to her attentively. Her father, on the other hand was aware of his daughter's habit of fantasizing things and he never believed in her wild stories. He even cautioned her that her fantasies might bring troubles to her some day.

She wished she could be admitted more deeply in the brother's affection so that some day he would take her with him. She felt that there was a wonderful world waiting for her and that she would feel quite at home there. She imagined riding there behind Geoff. In her imagination she saw how people would greet them there as they entered in their shinning dresses.

3. Sketch the character of Sophie's brother Geoff.
Ans:- Geoff, Sophie's elder brother is a reserved kind of guy. He has been three years out of school and works as an apprentice mechanic. He talks very little and barely shares his secrets with anyone. Sophie is fond of him and fees that her brother will never let her down, she is intimate with him and likes him the most. She shares her false dreams with him. But Geoff does not like her fantastic stories and he hardly believes in her. He does not encourage her, rather he keeps telling her that her aspirations are all false. As a brother he does love her but hardly supports her fantasies. Sophie fees that she will get support from her brother because he listens patiently to her stories. But actually Geoff only hears about her stories paying no head what so ever. He dose not talk much and only because of that he does not oppose her too much. He only hears the stories to keep Sophie's heart. Though she insists him to take her out in the town he never does so as he knows she is young and that her false dreams will land her in trouble.

Ans:-Sophie and Jansie were classmates and friends. Both of them hailed from lower middle class background and were earmarked for the biscuit factory. But both were quite different in their characters and temperament. While Jansie was practical and realistic Sophie lived a world of fantasy. She dream of owning a boutiques. Jansie rightly pointed that it required lots of money for a boutique. But Sophie could hardly be dissuade from imagining wild dreams. She also dream of becoming an actress or a fashion designer.
Her unrealistic dreams were not confined to the imagination of a dazzling life in future but extended to winning the attention of the Irish footfall prodigy Danny Casey. She even imagined him inviting her for a meeting
Jansie could hardly make her friend Sophie to see reasons and it made her sad. But Sophie's sadness was creation of her fantasy. Ans:- Sophie was a young school girl who is about to pass out of school in a few days. She is highly ambitious and her ambitious nature reaches an in-touchable extent. In real life she is a girl from a simple family in which the father works the whole day, the mother has to work hard with the household. They have a small and untidy house. They are not at all in a position to fulfill her false unrealistic dreams, but Sophie listens to none and adds up her fantasies. She tells her brother Geoff about her chance meeting with Danny Casey- the famous Irish player. She also tells that Danny will meet her alone some where. Her brother and father discourage her but she goes to a seduced place to meet her fancied man and had to return heart broken. So she has to suffer for not being aware of her real life.
