Ans--  The 'mighty dead' means the death of some powerful whom qualitative persons for whom great rewards are expected the dooms day. Though, they are dead, their glory and grandeur can never fade away but survives forever.

 

(ii)Why did the rural people set up the roadside stand?

Ans--

The rural people set up the roadside stand to sell their country products to the city people and to earn a quantity of money. The roadside stand is not successful because the city people ignored their stand.

(a) What did Sophie think of Geoff?

Ans-- Sophie was jealous of Geoff's silence. When Geoff was not speaking, he was away somewhere the places which were quite unknown to her. She wants to share his thoughts and affections.

 

(b) What was the belief regarding the channel in the Brahmaputra between Peacock Island and the mainland

Ans-- In winter, only a narrow dividing channel remained in the , Brahmaputra between the Peacock Island and mainland. There was a belief that if this channel ever dried completely it would mean the end of the British Raj.

12. Answer in 125-150 words:

 (a) How did the tiger king finally die?

Ans-- Pratibandapuram was called the Tiger king. He was identified as his Highness Jamedar- General, Khiledar Maior. He was also called as Sir Gilani Jung Jung Bahadur. Although he had many names, he was popularly called the Tiger king. He gets this name as tigers dominated his life and death.

The astrologer had said that Maharaja's death would come from a tiger. The Maharaja decided to kill the tigers in the forests of his kingdom. He started out on a tiger hunt. He did not allow any other person to kill tigers. This hunt continued for ten years when the tigers all died in Pratibandapuram, the tiger king married a girl from a royal family of a state with a large tiger population. That time he visited his father-in-law, he killed five or six tigers. In this way, he killed ninety nine tigers.The king had decided to give a wooden toy-tiger to his son on his birthday. One day, he was playing with his son and the toy suddenly, with one of the silvers pierced the king's right hand. Infection spread all over the arm. Three surgeons performed an operation but the king died. In this way the hundredth tiger took revenge on the king.

 

 

(b) What is Derry's attitude to life? What does it reflect on the society? Discuss.

Ans-- Derry is a 14 years old boy who has burnt face. One side of his face was burnt. Derry has a negative attitude to life. He does not like being with people who stare at his burnt face. They call it as terrible and ugly. They do not like to come near him or be friendly with him. Derry tries to avoid people and remains cut off from the society. The people say that only a mother can love such an ugly face.

             It reflects very badly on the society. People usually regard disabled people as different from them. They think that such people should study in separate schools and live only with jokes about them and gives them different insulting names. Thus, disabled people feel isolated from the society. They always remain away from the people. They are afraid that the people may make glib remarks about them. The disabled people like Derry slowly develop a complex that they are inferior to the common people. It causes them great mental pain. Therefore, the society must treat them with love and respect.

(a) What did Zitkala-Sa do to escape getting her hair shingled?

Ans-- Zitkala-sa escaped everyone's notice and came to a large room with three white beds in it. She hid under the bed in a dark corner. She was shocked with fear. But the people found her and pulled her out.

 

(b) What is Gondwana?

Ans--  Gondwana is a giant Southern super-continent. The climate in Gondwana is much warmer. A large variety of flora and fauna are available there. Later on, the landmass was forcibly separated into countries.

 

(c) What is Magh Bihu or Maghar Domahi?

Ans--  Magh Bihu or Maghar Domahi is a brilliant and an authoritative account of the Assamese festival of feasting. Magh Bihu is known as Bhogali

(d) What did people tell Derry to make him forget his pain?

Ans-- People told Derry to be brave. He was asked not to cry and complain. People advised him that there were worse people in the world than him.

 

(e) How much did the Maharaja pay for the wooden toy tiger?

Ans-- Maharaja paid three hundred rupees for the wooden toy tiger.
