Memories Of Childhood Extra Questions :-

1) What were the interesting sights that caught Bama's attention while walking home from school ?

Ans:-

Bama always walked home from school leisurely enjoying ever changing sights and scenes of the streets and market. The distance from her school to home could be covered in ten minutes but she took an hour. Sometimes it was performing monkey and sometimes it was the snake charmers that attracted her, for her attractions were many and varied; such as the cyclist pedaling non-stop for three days or a street play or a puppet show or a "no magic, no miracle “ stunt performance. Even the huge bell of the Margarita temple, and pong al offering cooked before the temple, the dried fish stalls near the Gandhi statue and other stalls and such other things attracted her. She even stopped to see how political parties put up stage for their meetings or a gypsy with his lemur in cage selling needles or some other things. She also enjoyed looking at a waiter coffee or some people cropping onions in peculiar ways. All these sights made her stop on the way and delayed her return home.

2) Compare and contrast the stories narrated by Zitkala-sa and Bama.

Ans:-“Memories of childhood” are two autobiographical episodes of two women belonging to two different cultures. One is an American Red Indian women and the other contemporary Tamil Dalit writer. Both are from marginalized communities who are the victims of marrow prejudices. Both the stories of Zitkala-sa and Bama are based on their childhood experience, otherwise they are not much sibrilor. While Bama's experience is that of a victim of horrible caste system, that Zitkala-sa seems more likely to be result of a difference of a racial outlook. She protests and fights against cutting of her long, thick hair because her mother has told her that only mourners wear short hair and cowards wear shingled hair. In her narration of the episode there is no hint anywhere of any racial angle or prejudice behind cutting of her long hair. But Bama's story records her sense of revolt and anger against the age old caste system and untouchability prevalent in India. She has witnessed how even the elders of their community are humiliated by the landlord of the upper caste. They are not allowed to touch the people of upper caste or food the eat, because their touch pollutes everything.
